Essential Idea To Success - Goals And Objectives

by Arthelo Palma

Essential Idea To Success Goals And ObjectivesAs children of God, we should learn to live by our goals and objectives. With this, He could freely give us His ultimate plans and purpose for individual life.

Don’t you know that goals and objectives are not the same? In purpose, they are, but not on their actual meaning, significance and role in the planning process.

In the planning process, goals and objectives are the indicators of how well the strategy is succeeding. In actual setting, goals and objectives are the means on how individuals or organizations will gauge the degree of their success. However, in the planning process, it is important to have clear identification between goals and objectives. After all, these are commonly statements that are closely associated with each other, but not actually the same.

Let us consider how Carpenter, Bauer & Erdogan (2009) define goals and objectives, respectively.

"Goals are outcome statements that define what an organization is trying to accomplish, both programmatically and organizationally. To illustrate what a goal is, try to think of an umbrella with its spokes coming out from the center. This umbrella is the goal itself. Let us take the case of Wal-Mart. Its goal might be “to grow its revenue 20 percent per year.”"
"Objectives on the other hand are precise, time-based, measurable actions that support the completion of a goal. Good objectives should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. If the goal is an umbrella itself, the spokes coming out from the center of it are the objectives. Let us take the case of Wal-Mart’s goal: “to grow its revenue 20 percent per year.” The actual objective associated with this goal might be: “open 20 new stores in the next six months.”"
