A Short Answer

by Arthelo Palma

1 Samuel 23

A Short Answer

How many times we need to face situations that we need to decide or throw some necessary actions? God allows us to use our intellect and logical reasoning, but the problem; they could somehow lead us to destruction. After all, if our heart is not in good condition, the logical reasoning we have might turn out highly illogical when they lead us to failures. God does not want us to fail, but sometimes He allows it for us to learn.

These should what we need to consider when we are about to decide.

1. Never decide when you are extremely overwhelmed with joy. Herod on his birthday was prompted to behead John the Baptist when he was pleased by his daughter’s dance and promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask (John 14:6-8).

2. Never also decide when you are extremely downcast or holding with fear and other related discomforts. David proved this when he decided to lie for fear of losing his life, which resulted to the death of 85 priests (1 Samuel 21; 1 Samuel 22).

3. Above all, learn to always inquire the Lord, our God (1 Samuel 23). David failed at first when he decided to do things without inquiring the Lord, but he learned a lesson. He learned that inquiring the Lord is important for his guidance and prior to the achievement of his success (1 Samuel 23:4,12). He inquired the Lord if he should attack the Philistines at Keilah, for he would want to make sure of his victory. For fear of Saul and the harm he might cause to the people at Keilah, David also inquired the Lord if running away from that place would be the best option. With God’s short answers, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand” (verse 4) and “They will” (verse 10), David was prompted to obey the Lord. Why? God’s answers for David, though they might be shorter, but full of assurance, because He is a God who tells the truth. The proof, David won his battle with Philistines at Keilah when he inquired the Lord, as he inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines (verse 5). God once again, delivered him from the hands of Saul (verse 13).

God’s message:

Inquiring the Lord will lead us to good decisions, outcomes and eventually success.

God’s promise:

God tells the truth to those who earnestly inquire Him for answers.

God’s command:

Always inquire the Lord before making moves.

God’s warning:

Not inquiring the Lord leads to failure and destruction.

Father in Heaven, in the name of Jesus, thank You once again for another life you gave us and today's word and reminder. Help us always decide on things by acknowledging Your Presence and by increasing our knowledge about Your words. Encourage our hearts to know more about hidden things You prepared for us. Erase away all those things that could hinder us to hear Your voice, in the name of Jesus. We just want to live victoriously with You, so help us Father choose the best things based on Your standards. This we ask and pray, in the name of Christ Jesus. Amen!
