Saul’s Jealousy Of David

by Arthelo Palma

1 Samuel 18

Saul’s Jealousy Of DavidAfter killing Goliath, David’s fame rose in Israel and Saul gave him a high rank in the army.

One day, after David together with the Israel’s ranks was returning from the battle, the people came out from town to meet King Saul, dancing while chanting “Saul has slain his thousands and David his tens of thousands” (verse 7).

Angry hearing of this, Saul thought, “They have credited David with tens of thousands, but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?” (verse 8). That was the beginning when Saul kept a jealous eye on David (verse 9).

Saul was afraid of David. The Lord was with David but had left Saul (verse 12).

Afraid to lose his kingdom to David, Saul plotted evil thoughts and initiated acts to kill the former.

With a spear in his hand, he attempted to pin David to the wall while he was playing his harp. But David was able to elude him twice that day (verses 10-11).

Saul attempted to give her daughter in marriage to David, so that she would be a snare to him and that it will bring him his fall to the hands of the Philistines (verse 21).

However, Saul realized that the Lord was with David, and his daughter loved David so much, which were the very reasons why Saul was even intensely afraid of David and considered him his enemy for the rest of his life (verses 28-29).

God’s message:

When God is at our side and when He wants to accomplish something through us, no one and nothing can stand against us and His plans for us. David was God’s chosen man to replace king Saul. Having this plan, God preserved David’s life and protected him from the hands of his enemies.

God’s promise:

God’s Spirit left Saul, but the Lord was completely with David, leading to his smooth flowing success. Therefore, success and victory come to those whom God’s Spirit is with them.

God’s command:

Always remember to check our heart at all times, for we might be keeping a jealous eye on someone else.

God’s warning:

Remember, a heart (life or the human soul) that is not in good shape is susceptible to initiate evil things and experience tormenting spirits (anger, pride, jealousy, hatred, etc.). Just like Saul, there would be no good decisions we can do and it would only bring fear and not joy when we continue to live a life not approved by God.

Submit everything we might feel heavy in our hearts today to God. It is the only way that will set us free from the bondage of evil.

Father in Heaven, in the name of Jesus, You said in Your word that we have to guard our heart because it is the wellspring of our life. Hearing Your Word today gives us the desire to allow You to check our heart, make it ever true. Check our life, make it worthy before You. Check if there are evil thoughts we hold in us that are completely detestable before the throne of Your Grace, for we want to be part of Your great plans. We want to receive Your promise for us that You will prosper us, not to harm us, but to give us hope and a future. We want to receive your promises Father. Today, cleanse us so that we will become worthy to receive your promises just like Your servant David. This we ask and pray, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!
