The Peril Of Retaliation

by Arthelo Palma

2 Samuel 3

The Peril Of Retaliation

It is hard for us not to retaliate in anger when somebody offended us or did wrong against us. For those who do not receive the Word of God, this is just a natural reaction for them, but it is not normal for those who already received God to act this way.

The Scripture says, “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay’” (Romans 12:19).

In today’s reading, Joab killed Abner because of their feud rooted from the time when the latter killed the former’s brother. Abner reminded Asahel, Joab’s brother prior to killing him because he did not want to kill him in the first place. David cursed Joab and his entire household because Abner was reconciled with David prior to his death. Abner’s intention was for the reconciliation of God’s people, but Joab’s mentality was for disunity and selfish intent.

In today’s time, Christians may not be literally killing each other, but the conflict among God’s people still existed leading us not to focus primarily on the vision that He has showed to us, but rather on settling disputes.

God’s message:

Disputes among God’s people will lead to negative results that hinder or slow down the fulfillment of God’s promise for us.

God’s promise:

God gives justice for his people.

 God’s command:

Allow God to give justice for us. Give focus on the vision that will lead to His ultimate plan and purpose for His people.

God’s warning:

Negative things in us lead to conflict, disputes or troubles.

Make it a lifestyle to never take revenge just like what David did and what Jesus Christ told us. Always trust in God for everything and He will do the rest..

Father in Heaven, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, it is our prayer that You will cleanse our heart always and free us from negative things that could put us in bondage. Help us to learn to trust in You for everything as we look forward to unity among us Your people, and as one body of Christ, for us to walk on the vision leading to the fulfillment of Your plan and wonderful purpose for us. This we ask and pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!
