When All You Need Is Love

by Arthelo Palma

1 Samuel 13

When All You Need Is Love

Here are some of the realities we have to face. We are now living in the generation by which premarital sex has become customary. The advancement of technology allows our younger generation to surf the web and come across with pornographic and other related materials. One elemental implication of this is that there would be no assurance a young individual or anyone today would have a better idea where to draw the line between love and lust.

In today’s reading, God wants to remind us the difference between love and lust, and what real love is all about.

The story of Amnon and Tamar would remind us that sometimes what we feel that seems love, especially among young people, is not that feeling we think we want to believe but lust (verses 2; 15).

The Word of God is clear about what is a real love. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

If every one of us would then love each other with the love of God, idealistic it may sound, but then surely we would be making this world a better place to live in, not just today, but in the future generations. This is the very message Jesus Christ would want to instill us.

However, since we forget to love most of the time, but instead think of our own selfish desires, intentions, personal petitions, motives and wants, chaos are everywhere and we are vulnerable to blame each other, or worst, our very own self. The bottom line is we need to evaluate our own life. Have we loved our neighbors, in the same way how we love our self? Or are we too self-absorbed that we forget to think we are not supposed to live as an island. We need each other, so we are obliged to show kindness, eliminate our pride, and detest what is wrong – the very manifestations of an indisputable love of God for us.

Satan is not the author of love, but it is God. God is love (1 John 4:16b). What Satan can do is to inject us with lust, pride, anger, self-centeredness, greediness, hatred and the list goes on for us to be separated from the love of God so that we would remain in chaos.

God’s message:

We need to know our feelings (emotions) and inquire God, at all times.

God’s promise:

Do not forget God’s teaching because doing so will lead to abundant and long life (Proverbs 3:1-4).

God’s command:

Never do things that would go against love, for God is love (1 John 4:16b)!

God’s warning:

Consequences come to those who do not follow God’s teachings and implement His real principle which is founded by His love.

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, with all the humility, we would like to ask for forgiveness for our sins, especially for not following Your will for us. Help us to feel genuine love for each other that should separate us from lust, pride, anger, selfish motives, greediness, hatred and other evil things of this world. Help us realize the fact that without You we can do nothing because our knowledge and wisdom would make us vulnerable to go for our selfish desires, motives, intentions and wants. This we ask and pray, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!
