From the report:
The judge found that both boys used their fingers to penetrate the girl in the early hours of August 12 while she was so drunk that she lacked the cognitive ability to give her consent for sex. A picture that was circulated among classmates later that day showed the victim naked and passed out.
Ohio’s legal definition of rape includes digital penetration.
As noticed in this crime case, the reasons why these teenagers acted the things they did were due to strong influence of alcohol, peer pressure, the media and other relevant factors.
In fact, the report added:
Judge Lipps described much of the evidence as “profane and ugly.” In sentencing the boys, he said rape was among the gravest of crimes and noted that they could have been tried as adults with far harsher punishments. He also said the case was a cautionary lesson in how teenagers conduct themselves when alcohol is present and in “how you record things on social media that are so prevalent today.”
Let us observe how these teenagers conduct themselves nowadays especially in the presence of peer influence and other factors.
The presence of alcohol
If we based it on the case presented in the news report, alcohol could drive these young people crazy, and to the point that this leads them to the opportunity to commit various related crimes and display of profanity.
Many things as observed on how young people act these days are due to the strong influence coming from the media. There are many similar cases available on the internet that could show us the same pattern on how the two teenagers conducted themselves. This gives us the idea that aside from peer pressure, the media could have a strong influence on how teenagers behave in a group.
Aside from these mentioned factors, there are many reasons that could help us point why the young people today behave the way they do, but let us go down deeper into the bottom line.
The role of parents
As a father, I am convinced that there is a great role of parents in raising their children and leading them to take the right path. While it is true that there are many factors influencing the behavior of a child, the foundation of good ethical conduct starts at the basic unit of the society. Every home should provide the appropriate foundation for a good moral standard to ensure higher value for respect and love within the community. A child must be able to learn this basic principle.
Proverbs 22:6 puts it, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” A child or a person may commit mistakes or the external environment may influence him, but in the end, he would still be able to recognize the truth about the good things taught by his parents at home.
In a common sense parenting with God’s principles, parents should not take this instruction [Proverbs 22:6] so light, as I could attest as a parent that it is effective in building a better society to live.
